A short history about UMP and how it was establish.
UMP is one of technical universities, which was established in 2002. It is the 16th public university that was officially gazetted on 16 February 2002. By order from the Ministry of Education, UTM-KCP campus was taken over and became the temporary campus for Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUKTEM) or University of Technology and Engineering College on May 2002. During that time, the institutions started its first Academic session 2002/2003 with the enrolment of 313 students on 30 May 2002. Later, on 20 September 2006 Council of Ministers approved the exchange of the name KUKTEM to Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The change has seen UMP preserving its niche area as the university’s focus and in academic programmes as well as the enrolment in lined with its establishment’s goal that is, to reach 10, 000 to 15, 000 students. Also, UMP is retaining its focus as underlined by the Government of Malaysia.

The Location of UMP
UMP campus Gambang is strategically located near the East Coast Highway, chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, automotive industrial zone as well as biotechnology in the state of Pahang. It is situated in the district of Gambang, 30km from Kuantan, the capital city of Pahang, an estimated of 350km away from KLIA, and consequently 10km from the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport, Kuantan. UMP Gambang is a temporary campus, the main campus is located in Kuala Pahang Pekan. Two faculty has been relocated to UMP Pekan in 2009, the two faculty is Faculty of Electrical and Electronic, and Faculty of Mechanical.

Some basic facilities available at UMP
UMP provides adequate facilities which are relevant as one of the public high institution in Malaysia. The basic facilities include students’ residential complex, library, health centre, student activity centre, lecture halls and rooms, laboratories factory-like concept, cafeteria, and sports and recreational equipment.

UMP's goal in educating the students

The establishment of UMP is to lead the development of human capital in the fields of Engineering and Technology. Thus, four Main Products have been determined which are, Technical Knowledge, Technical Competency, Soft Skills and Entrepreneur Competency. The ratio of theory in contrast to practical competency available in UMP is 60:40. Apart from industrial training, students are also exposed to ways to utilise simulation equipment and teaching aids. This practical concept is further strengthened with the teaching method that focuses on students (student-centred learning). As a result, UMP hopes to generate graduates that are competent, possess outstanding attitude and responsible in lined with National Philosophy of Education.
